YOLANDA: THE AFTERMATH

By | December 4, 2013

The recent disasters we encountered are not a wrath of God for He is very loving; nor His way of reminding us of His existence for He has better compassionate ways. The Philippines lies in the earth’s RING of Fire and we are surrounded by oceans and seas, that’s the simple reason why we suffer from these events.

Now that we are in the process of assessing the damage super
TyhoonYolanda has made to our country, many so called instant experts come to blame agencies and all the people concerned thus putting themselves as a better individual. This is not a time for things like that. This is the time to help and rebuild people’s dignity to be human again and connected to his family, society, and the rest of the world.
But first the truth and facts.

YOLANDA FACTS:
1. It is a super typhoon never in the history of modern times had seen at more than 300kph in the reading of international weather station using satellite images and reading equipment compared to PAGASA’s reading at 215 wind gustiness.
2. Local media announced a storm surge at 3 meters or 20 feet high whereas CNN announced a 40 feet high storm surge – a big difference that can save and kill life.
3. Storm Surge is the right label on the water that ravaged several provinces of the Philippines.
4. Fear set in every Filipinos’ mind during the actual meeting with Typhoon Yolanda. Words are not enough how strong and powerful Yolanda was.
5. Chaos replaced fear when death and destruction was seen in every place by a survivor.
6. Come then the anarchy when law and order was nowhere to be found in every area.

TRUTH
1. We have a system of never-ending disaster and donation from citizens in our country in every kind of natural and man-made disaster. In a span of two months, we have the Zamboanga war-like incident then the Bohol earthquake and now the Typhoon Yolanda that literally flattened Tacloban city and other provinces.
2. In spite of annual disasters, the government has no true disaster plan that can match the need of the victims.
3. Politics comes first in this country above anything else. The most crucial period is the 1st 24 hours of the aftermath but in this country the rescue vehicle whether it is by land, sea, or air will be loaded by politicians and media people to make photo opportunity in the disaster area and the basic necessities of the victims will follow after their so called “assessment” of the situation in spite of the regular disasters we experience.
4. There are no long term plans how the country will cope up with the changes of nature.
5. That there are a lot of NAPOLES-kind people( based on Ben Hur’s testimony about what they did on The Ondoy and Habagat fund), in the government and the private sector. They will make a lot of cash from the donation and emergency fund that will be supposedly released to the victims.
6. That we have to accept and re-act with the new “norms” of the weather and world situation.
7. That we, as citizens should plan our lives in our local community based on the daily experiences and regular disaster that is happening to us. We plan based on nature’s path and not go against it.

Based on my forecast, regional or different places will experience different calamities and disaster. One may ask where the best place to live is. Actually, there is none. We must learn to adjust to the constant changes we are experiencing. We must be prepared and heed the warning and signs of times. We must not panic and feel like the doomsayer instead we must prepare ourselves for any calamity or accident that may happen anytime in our lives and in our lifetime.

Before I end up my article, I would like to give an advance forecast. The West Valley Fault of Luzon may move around the month of March in 2014. We should always be prepared for any kind of event or disaster.

As a final point, as an ordinary citizen and fellow man, I encourage families to be a foster home this Christmas season for the family of Tacloban victims. We are encouraging one family to share their home and their food and love this Christmas to a typhoon victim.
