The Second Harvest

Wasting food is deeply unethical.  Food waste is not only a humanitarian concern, but it is also an environmental and economic concern. The excessive amount of food wasted everyday could feed thousands and millions of hungry people. Food waste impacts the environment as well. It is one of the most significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions globally.

Food waste is Ontario’s two-million-ton problem. Wasted food utilizes vast areas of land, water, and human resources. It feeds the landfills producing methane gasses, rather than nourishing the people.  We are now at a critical time when people need stable access to healthy food more than ever. Losing food to landfill is not an option. It is time to act now. To avoid food going to landfills, food items that are still good to go can be donated in any food saving charities.

Second Harvest is the largest food rescue organization in Canada and global thought leader on food recovery. They work across the supply chain from farm to retail to capture surplus food before it ends up in landfill. Their vision is so simple and true – No Waste. No Hunger. Their core work is to redistribute nutritious, unsold food from across Canada to charities, nonprofits, and Indigenous communities.  Since 1985, Second Harvest has rescued over 177 million pounds of healthy food and prevented 192 million pounds of greenhouse gases from entering our atmosphere.
