Trivia:

Did you know that from the ‘50s to the ‘70s there were American actors who had considered making films in the Philippines a lucky charm for them? To begin with, in an interview published then with the late Tyrone Power, he categorically stated that filming American Guerilla in the Philippines ushered in more luck to him. He became in demand, claiming the matinee idol tag.

The deceased John Agar (ex-husband of legendary Hollywood actress Shirley Temple) and Jeff Chandler followed suit. John shot the Spanish-American war opus The Day of the Trumpet in Vigan, Ilocos Sur while Jeff filmed Merrill’s Marauders in Philippine jungles. Both recognized the fact, their fame rose higher after the release of the said flicks abroad.

Subsequently, veteran actor Burgess Meredith bannered the suspense-drama pic Man on the Run with Pinay actress Olivia Cenizal which proved to be his stepping stone to more métier roles not only in American movies but also in Broadway.

While John Saxon admitted his career was somewhat on the wane. But with a starrer he did in the Philippines with movie king Fernando Poe Jr. titled Walls of Hell, he bounced back. He was paired with popular American actresses.

In the case of Burt Reynolds, he was an acting neophyte when he accepted the lead role in Golden Bullet which featured Rebecca Rocha (mom of Nino Muhlach). Upon his return to U.S., Burt got major assignments that eventually made him one of the top Hollywood action stars.

In the ‘70s, two young actors made a name after doing movies with Philippine location. The first was Nicholas Hammond who top billed Cherry Blossoms, with Hilda Koronel. Later, Nicholas gained stardom as the first one to tackle the role of Spiderman.

Remember the Nora Aunor starrer Lollipops and Roses? One of her leading men was singer-actor Don Johnson. Eventually, Don turned a singing heartthrob worldwide, starred in American flicks too. In the distaff side, Katherine Ross was not a big name when she did the war saga Bus to Bataan which was a shot in the arm for her acting career. Katherine shone in many films afterwards, led by The Graduate, opposite Dustin Hoffman.

That time, who would ever forget, the curvaceous actress, a newcomer Ursula Andres who played the love interest of John Derek in a movie entirely shot in the Philippines? Not long after, Ursula was a most sought lead actress, topped by Dr. No, the first James Bond series of Sean Connery.

Julia Barretto’s Decisions not Publicity Ruse?

Some observers have raised their eyebrows on the latest moves of teen star Julia Barretto. Firstly, she has reconciled with her dad Dennis Padilla. Then she dropped the case she filed to change her surname from Padilla to Barretto on her birth certificate.

Detractors opined it’s a mere publicity ruse so as to erase bad vibes on Julia that tend to slow down her rising career. Much more so her arch rival Liza Soberano beats her in terms of fame out of the unexpected hit TV series Forever more.

In a TV interview, Julia laughed it off, expounding that to kiss and make up with her father didn’t have anything to do with promo. “I do love my dad heartily sans any pretension. And honestly, I’m happy not envious of Liza’s sudden popularity. We’re friends, not to mention we are both Kapamilya stars.” Julia enthused.

Aljur’s Cases with GMA-7 Still Unsettled

With Aljur Abrenica’s sudden appearance in the Sunday All Stars Show, not a few thought that his altercation with GMA-7 bosses has been settled.  Remember Aljur filed a suit against GMA-7 which resulted a counter demand from the Kapuso network?

Well, while Aljur can appear in the said Kapuso program, it does not mean the dropping of the charges. As a spokesperson of GMA-7 reiterated, the court cases have remained unsettled to this date yet being negotiated by both camps. Chances are, it will lead to a positive result as Aljur’s confidante buttressed.

When queried on his comment, Aljur’s younger sibling-actor Vin Abrenica who’s with TV 5 expressed aplomb on the possible positive outcome. “I do believe despite being away from quite a time from the limelight, my brother hasn’t lost his appeal with the public. He can manage to regain his fame.”
