By | September 27, 2013

Trivia:
Did you know that ex-Grammy awardee and famous singer Patti Austin of I Believe and In My Life fame has generated trending topic worldwide? She buttressed that the greatest singers around the world tend to come from the Philippines. Many have unquestionably agreed to Patti’s statement.
This brings to my mind that since the ‘50s up to the present time, Filipino singers have been universally acclaimed. Durable warbler Pilita Corrales ignited it during the ‘50s when she won in a song fest in Tokyo, Japan with her rendition of the original song A Million Thanks. Eventually, Pilita was dubbed Asia’s Queen of Songs.
At her performance in Las Vegas, USA together with Reycard Duet, Elizabeth Ramsey and Ric Arellano, they wowed the Americans in the audience that their shows were extended for many months. That brought forth their guestings in popular TV programs in the US.
Then songstress Dulce garnered first place in the international singing tilt held in Hong Kong which catapulted her to fame. Up to now, her winning piece Ako Ang Nagwagi, Ako ang Nasawi remains a classic song. And her belting it has been a must every time she would hold a concert in other shores.
Hajji Alejandro and Regine Velasquez had duplicated Dulce’s feat in the international singing competition held in South Korea and Indonesia. Hajji popularized the ditty Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika abroad while Regine was accorded the title Asia’s Princess of songs.
Of course, the great impact all over the world came to the fore through Lea Salonga. She was chosen to play Miss Saigon in the London, England version after a rigid audition joined by hundreds of applicants. Later, Lea got the Laurence Olivier best stage actress award for Miss Saigon.
Subsequently, US Broadway adaptation of Miss Saigon went to Lea too which culminated by her bagging the Tony best actress for Miss Saigon. Lea enacted the lead roles in Alladin, Flower Drum Song and Les Miserables. Tucked in Lea’s belt also were the leading lady’s voice in the Waltz Disney Films’ Aladdin. To top it, Lea has been accorded the biggest triumph in her life as one of Waltz Disney’s Legends.
Out of Lea’s success as Miss Saigon, in various countries Pinay singers emerged victorious in the search for Miss Saigon part. Among them were Monique Wilson, Janine Desiderio and Isay Alvarez.
Who can forget the most famous Filipino song Anak that had been translated to many languages all over the world? It’s synonymous to rock singer Freddie Aguilar, the composer-singer of that song. Aside from a top prize in an international singing contest, Freddie commands huge followers, locally and globally. That his long years in the limelight have not dimmed his stature.
Later, Lani Misalucha and Jed Madela brought home the bacon. Lani was called Asia’s nightingale for her melodious belting prowess. Eventually, Lani became the first Pinay singer who penetrated the mainstream world class performers in Las Vegas, up to this day.
On the other side, Jed Madela made history as the first Pinoy who won 5 gold medals in the World Singing Olympics in US. Currently, Jed is one of the most sought concert stars locally and internationally. Just recently, Jed reached another pedestal upon being given the hall of Fame recognition in the World Singing Olympics.
Of course, the half-breed Pinoy singers have added credence to what Patti Austin remarked. They’re Apple d Aps of the Black Eyed Peas , Grammy winner Bruno Mars and American Idol sensation Jessica Sanchez. And before Billy Crawford reactivated his career in the Philippines he made a name in Europe with the success of his album. Fact was, he landed in the covers of showbiz mags there.
The list of world class singers today won’t be complete sans the mention of the hottest, most controversial belter Charice.
Aga to Host Warner Bros. Show
Back from his trip to US, Aga Muhlach will soon host a new TV show at TV5, a local version of a Warner Bros show. That was the purpose of going there with TV5 execs to finalize with the producers and host of the said program which starts before the year ends.
Aside from his other TV5 show Pinoy Explorer which resumes recently, Aga takes time pursuing his electoral protest. Despite he accepted his defeat, he goes for the veracity of the election returns in Camarines Sur where he lost in the congressional bid.
By the way, Aga was caught by the camera watching Ellen De Generes Show live when she featured You Tube sensation Aldrich Talondigan and James Bucong. Aga’s proud of the two Pinoys who really mesmerized, held the American audience swooning to the hilt.
Marian Provoked by ABS-CBN?
A hot topic days back was an aftermath of Marian Rivera ‘s gracing the press con of her starrer with Ai-Ai delas Alas Kung Fu Divas held at the ABS-CBN compound. Reportedly, the guards didn’t allow Marian to enter at once for verification if her name was listed in the list of guests. Marian kept her cool, just held her composure.
A bitchy scribe surmised that possibly ABS-CBN people did it possibly to test her mataray nature which she didn’t elucidate at all. Truth to tell, Marian ignored that incident. She’s even all praises for the promo done by ABS-CBN for Kung Fu Divas. “I’m truly amazed by its publicity.” These were Marian’s exact words.
Sarah’s Offended by Lea’s Banter?
Some viewers of The voice of the Philippines TV show opined that somehow Lea Salonga’s banter on co-host Sarah Geronimo seems pejorative. Does Sarah take it lightly or is she offended? Well, Sarah herself comes to the defense of Lea with these words.
“I welcome the banter, feel happy over it. Masaya ako di pikon sa pagbabara niya. For I’ve learned from her that’s why. I know she’s right.”Could it be a merely quash reply from Sarah?
Whatever, this writer noticed that at times Lea’s deportment in the show appears to be over reaction. Or to be specific, she’s OA.
