As the spiritual fervor of the Holy Week reverberates on the air, some meaningful messages of celebrities beckoned us. A glaring one was instilled by the late Rudy Fernandez. We chanced upon him that particular Maundy Thursday. He divulged that it was the most memorable Lent season for him. He felt completely at peace with himself for he was all prepared to face the Creator. For some time he had suffered a serious ailment that he was ready to go.
“I believe my family is ok. I have given myself to the Lord. If He would get back my life, with all my heart I’ll accept it. That’s why this Holy Week I’d devote all my time to Him.” Rudy uttered with a pious smile. We couldn’t forget those words for weeks later, Rudy passed away. We could sense as we took a glance at his coffin that his amiable face truly depicted what he pronounced to us that he would be extremely happy. A message that lingers on our mind to this day.
Over the phone years ago, we got the last chance to talk with the late action star Robert Lee. Considered then the Bruce Lee of the Philippines. He had a malignant cancer which he admitted he couldn’t no longer endure the pain as he whispered, “di ko na kaya ang sobrang sakit.I’ll medidate to God this Holy Week sana ay mapatawad ako sa gagawin ko. Just pray for me.”
We didn’t take it seriously so later we were shocked to hear from his brother that he was gone. Robert committed suicide by hanging himself. All his life, Robert was obedient son to his parents, a loving brother to his siblings, a dependable friend sans vices and to top it, a devout Catholic who simply lost strength to fight his ailment. Wherever he is now, what he craved for the forgiveness of the Lord has been bestowed to him.
In showbiz world, the name Perla Bautista denotes not only a multi-awarded veteran actress but also a charismatic person who devotes most of her time in charitable works and someone most anybody can rely on. For decades now, Perla has travelled throughout the country preaching the words of Christ, together with the devotees of Virgin Mary.
Admittedly, in her younger years Perla had sinned too, with a rebellious streak in her. What transformed Perla transpired once she attended a Holy Week retreat? To date, she can recall the message mouthed by a bishop. One has everything in life but unknowingly, remains nothing if he lacks spiritual richness, especially the act of loving and giving.
“Since then, I’ve learned to be Christ-like. Mas masaya ako pag nakapag-share sa iba ng kailangan nila sa abot ng makakaya ko, spiritually and materially ke in or out ng showbiz. I may not be rich financially but in terms of spiritual guidance I’ve a lot to offer.” Says Perla who’s one of the most loved actresses hereabouts.
Piolo Chosen Handsomest actor
In the survey conducted by the noontime TV show Happy, Yipee, Yehey in its guessing game portion, Piolo Pascual topped the list of the handsomest local actor. Dingdong Dantes and Richard Gutierrez tied for second place, followed by Sam Milby, Aga Muhlach and Coco Martin. Mind you, despite his mature age and the presence of young actors, Aga still makes it to the top five. From ’80s to the ‘90s, Aga was the front runner.
Willie Gifted Aga With a Car?
Did Willie Revillame really give Aga Muhlach a brand new car? A grapevine informed us it’s his appreciation for Aga’s transfer to TV-5. If that’s true then we’d say among Willie’s long time chums it’s Aga who stands by his side against ABS-CBN. Could there be a callous reaction for both Aga and Ch 2 people, granting there’s truth to it?

Will Vilma As Cory Push thru?
How true that Vilma Santos would no longer enact the late President Cory Aquino in her film bio for Star Cinema? The last time we asked Vi about it, she intimated the filming would just be postponed out of her hectic political schedules. If ever, did Vi back out or the producer opted for a replacement? Beforehand, we knew Kris Aquino had a say in choosing Vi to portray her mom onscreen.
Echo, After You Cesar
By the time this issue comes out, Jericho Rosales would have already attended the premiere night of his first international movie Subject: I Love You in U.S.He’s also scheduled to grace the film fest where the opus competes. The plot tells about the Filipino who invented the much talked about computer virus with a devastating effect world-wide. The cast includes named American actors and some Pinoy talents.
Hopefully, Echo fulfills the elusive dream of many Pinoy actors to make it big in Hollywood. Remember, Cesar Montano almost did via the high-budgeted American film The Great Raid. He got plaudits for his performance abroad. But there wasn’t a follow up after that brief triumph. Will Echo achieve what Cesar failed to accomplish?
On Lea and Charice
A showbiz authority once commented that local talents who took international fame have never been that luminous stars in the Philippines. And top stars in the country have never shone abroad. She cited the case of Lea Salonga who made a splash in Europe and U.S. via Miss Saigon and other accomplishments. But not as popular or in demand in the country, While Sharon Cuneta or even Regine Velasquez, locally superstars didn’t create waves in foreign lands.
We seem to agree. Look at Charice now who’s famous in U.S. and other places. But not as a byword or most sought after in the Philippines. Compared to her contemporary Sarah Geronimo who’s a top drawer as singer and movie star. Yet she’s a nobody abroad unlike Charice. Seemingly, celebrities can’t have the best of both worlds.
