The journalism world mourns the unexpected demise of Mario Hernando, one of the big names in the writing field. For months, Mario appeared up and about yet in truth he kept his serious ailment under wraps. The grieving people around have been caught by surprise by his sudden passing away.

In retrospect, Mario was a respected columnist for prestigious newspapers, notably Malaya. Later, he turned film reviewer as well. Together with other movie critics, they formed the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, an award-giving body, called the Urian. All the winners in various categories, topped by best actor and best actress, voiced out winning the Urian trophies a big boost and recognition in their career.

Subsequently, Mario had been appointed a member of the Movie, TV, Radio Classification Board (MTRCB), the only censorship group on the air and the widescreen. Mario then would often give the difference between totally lewd flicks the board banned and the artistically done sex-oriented films that the board approved with cuts.

As a person, Mario was well loved in and out of showbiz, out of his unpretentious and ever supportive nature. Celebrities and colleagues alike frequently got him as a sponsor in a wedding or as the ‘ninong; of their kids. They echoed. “we found in Mario a real friend through thick and thin.”

During the time it so happened that my daughter Myra was one of Mario’s students in com arts at the University of Sto. Thomas, he cajoled me when we bumped into each other. “Talagang opposite ka ng anak mo. You’re the quiet type, sitting in the corner. She’s so lively, an active participant within the classroom and even in campus activities.”

Before I enplaned to Canada almost ten years ago, my intimate chums tendered a despidida bash for me. Mario came to wish me a better life abroad that showcased he valued our long time friendship. Eventually, the long distance did not hamper our communication through our constant exchanged messages via facebook that ended weeks ago bed-ridden that he was. Eternal peace be with you up there with Lord Mario.
