HELLO, TORONTO!

‘Galing ng Pinoy!- sasabihin na naman natin yan at ia- assure ang ating mga sarili on the greatness of our race.
Isang Pinoy kasi was credited recently by international astronomers as having brought to the attention of the astronomy community a rare and curious phenome-non in the sky.
Early last month (November), Christopher Go of Cebu City noticed the reappear-ance of brightness to the otherwise white belt surrounding planet Jupiter. This is known as the South Equatorial Belt. The belt used to be colored brown but has faded out sometime in September. Go’s (he is with the physics department of the University of San Carlos, he is also an amateur astronomer) observation aroused the interest and excitement of the astronomy community of the world.
Now, skygazers are observing the phenomenon brought about by Jupiter’s winds and clouds chemistry. They believe that the stripe is making a comeback to its original hue.
E ano naman kaya ang significance nito?
Para sa mga scientists, ito daw ay pagkakataon na nilang masubukan ang mga bagong gamit at instrumentong makakapag- test sa ‘chemical and dynamical changes of this phenomenon’. According to scientist Leigh Fletcher at Oxford University, baka din daw malutas na ang misteryo ng color transition at matukoy ang lifespan ng belt at zone structure ng planetang Jupiter.
Dahil sa observations ni Go, nagbuo na ng isang worldwide team of expert scientists ang UC Berkeley. Inaasahang ang kanilang mga notes and findings will be of great help to the 2 space missions being readied to study planet Jupiter- NASA will be fielding the spacecraft Juno in 2016; a larger mission to orbit Jupiter and its satellite Europa is slated to kick off after year 2020.
AYAN na nga ba ang sinasabi ng best neighbor/friend ko ( Belen is her name and she is Pampanguena). We can put to better use our pagka chismoso/ chismosa, pa- giging sobrang mapagmasid at mapanuri (hahaha). Look down around you and observe- sa barangay mo, amuy amuyin ang paligid…may mabaho bas a barangay hall? Naku, hwag naman sana- 15 years old pa lang sya, she’s a baby!
‘Sobrang makwento, e’, sabi nya.
Zobel bested other Asian nominees for his hands- on approach in nurturing people and was chosen Asia’s Best in People Development- he received the Asia Talent Management Award in Singapore last month during the 9th Asia Business Leaders Awards.
Sabi ni Zobel,’he was surprised’(but I hope happily naman). Mahalaga daw ang karangalang ibinigay sa kanya sa buo nyang team- as some of you may know po, the Ayala business is actually made up of a group of companies.
Ang Ayala companies are known to have developed a strong community culture among their workers. This sense of family have produced very positive results in company/ employee performance over the years.
Nurturing ang 51 year- old boss na ito. Ayala is the 3rd Pnoy to be given honor by the award- giving body based in Singapore. The other two were Gerardo Ablaza, Jr. who was named Asia Business Leader in 2004. He was former CEO of Globe Telecom; and Jollibee’s Ernesto Tanmantiong who was Corporate Citizen of the Year for 2006.
From a being a former employee myself, I can say, masarap talaga ang isang outfit na nakapag establish ng sense of family among workers- there is a feeling of belonging, of feeling that what one does is vital to the final output, and most importantly (sa akin lang ha kasi naranasan ko talaga ito)yun bang, yung maliit mong comment (recitation) or input ay binibigyang halaga… na di baga parang napakaboba mo at pulos ang mga boss ang may sapat na utak para paandarin ang opisina.
And finally, di ko pawawalan ang news na ito about the best in Pinoy talent- another award, this time for a non- government group operating in Negros Occidental. As this issue comes out in the streets, the world will know if it has garnered the ultimate award in the BBC World Challenge 2010 but for now, Filipinos are extremely happy that the Alternative Indigenous Development Foundation of Bacolod was chosen as one of only three institutions in the whole world chosen to compete for first place of the prestigious Energy Institute Awards. EI is a professional body for the energy industry. It is based on London, UK.
Each year, Energy Institute Awards recognizes individuals and groups for their exemplary work and contributions in setting standards of excellence and innovations in the global energy industry.
AIDFI won in the Community Initiative Award Category with its entry ‘ Running Water Uphill’, a hydraulic ram pump program that has provided water to many hill and mountain areas not only in the Philippines but in other developing countries as well. For lack of travel funds, no member represented the NGO during the announcement on Nov 18.
To date the Bacolod NGO has already installed 170 ram pumps benefitting some 50,000 people. It has set up pumps not only in the Philippines but also in many developing nations(West Timor, Malaysia, Nepal, Cambodia, Costa Rica, etc) plus the wealthy nations of Japan and France.
It has also provided technology transfer to countries notably to Afghanistan where today, it is the Afghans who produce and install the pumps in their remotest villages and communities.

Tingnan nga nyo, nakaka proud di po ba? Mas katanggap-=tanggap na claim to fame ito kesa makilala sa ‘Luneta massacre, Maguindanao massacre, mga international terrorists dawn a nagtatago dito tulad nitong si Patek, etc. etc. And check out the range of talent- mula managerial, engineering, astronomy, wow talaga sa galing!
Feel good tayo lahat mga Pinoy!
Thank you everyone who emailed me about the ad that appeared in the previous Balita issue (thank you, my publisher!). I have learned a lot about your preferences. Hopefully, I will be able to accommodate your preferences as I develop our Tanay farm.
Thank you, Toronto!
