Did you know that from the ‘50s, Sampaguita Pictures movie outfit built up two acclaimed actresses who currently remain active in showbiz? The duo held the distinction of Miss Philippine Movies and award winning actresses as well. They’re none other than the incomparable Gloria Romero and Susan Roces.
Prior to the discovery of Susan, Gloria held supreme in the celluloid strips, be it in drama or comedy stuffs. At the start of her acting career, Gloria shone in tear-jerking stuffs like in Monghita, Palasig, May Umaga Pang Darating. It was, however, in comic flick Dalagang Ilokana that she was declared a box office star and FAMAS best actress. In fact, Gloria was the first actress handed an award in comedy that sparked controversy then.
Out of the awry comment of some sectors she did not deserve the trophy, the late bigwig of Sampaguita Pictures Dr. Jose Perez returned the trophy to the FAMAS body. But the officers did not accept it back, with a message in every inch Gloria was truly the deserving winner. This ameliorated Gloria to exert more effort in versatility.
Albeit Gloria tied the marital knots with actor Juancho Gutierrez who years after passed away, she sustained her being in demand as an actress, her popularity intact. When her movie studio closed shop and in the presence of young, famous actresses, Gloria actively enacted major assignments in several new movie companies and in the boob tube shows.
Every now and then Gloria appeared in award winning flicks and in the comedy or drama TV series. Gloria’s latest is the long running fantasy series Daig ka ng Lola which puts her in the title role.
In mid-50s, Dr. Perez was so impressed meeting a young girl Jesusa Sonora, a student from the Visayas whose looks amazed him. He handed her the screen name Susan Roces, with the tag the Face that Refreshes. Of course, even the young generation today vividly would remenisce Susan’s many accomplishments off and onscreen.
Topmost of which occurred on the marriage of Movie Queen Susan and Movie King Fernando Poe Jr. Undeniably, their tandem actuated the top box office pair and the most followed couple off-cameras. At the demise of FPJ, this writer would cherish her full assistance to me as president of Movie Writers & Press Photographers Association of the Philippines (MOWPPAP). For Susan knew Ronnie initiated to put it up to help the bed-ridden and unemployed media men.
An unforgettable event happened during the opening of the MOWPPAP unpublished photo exhibit of Ronnie held at the Ali Mall days after his burial. Susan came with her family to see those pictures some of which amused Susan. She laughed seeing for the first time the teenage pic of Ronnie garbed in girl’s dress taken in his early film as youngster. At the end of its exhibit, we were so touched when Susan bought from the association all the photos for her to keep as souvenir.
So I’ve joyous time with my close friend-writer Baby Jimenez who’s also Canada based every time we would chance upon each other. She’s Susan’s closest showbiz chum. We’ve wonderful moments recounting memories about Susan and Ronnie plus her role in Ang Probinsyano, TV top rater for years.
Daniel-Kathryn Pair Reunited But….
After almost two years of not being paired in a project, reel and real team Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo will be reunited in a TV series. Reports have it that for the first time the duo will tackle totally action roles. However, both dismissed brewing talks forthcoming plunge into marriage looms. Daniel expressed aboveboard words. “We have not talked about it. We are not ready to marry.”
Incidentally, Kathryn feels so blithe to hear from many that she’s the undisputed box office queen 2019 for the record breaking results worldwide of her starrer Hello, Love, Goodbye.
Megan: No Plan to get Pregnant
Albeit Megan Young and Mikael Daez have nearly a decade of relationship and a recent wedding, Megan has no plan yet to get pregnant which Mikael understands. Aside from their acting career, traveling abroad comes foremost. This time, both are enthused to admit to fulfill a dream destination soon: to fly to South America.
Currently, Mikael is occupied taping the new TV series Love of My Life while Megan reportedly has accepted a forthcoming drama series also, aside from endorsing beauty events as an erstwhile Miss World.
James Reid Goes International
As of this writing, James Reid widens his horizon after his split with Nadine Lustre. He’s still in Los Angeles, California to go international in the music world. He has a collaborative project with Grammy awardee Fil-Am Ramon Banga Jr. better known as Illmind.
In 2018, Illmind produced the Beyonce, Jay-Z record Everything is Love, a Grammy winner. Aside producing, he’s a songwriter, educator of hip-hop, pop, soul and electronic music. Illmind feels optimistic James would make an accomplishment within this year through his assistance.
Meanwhile, James and Nadine have a good working relationship, with forthcoming commitments with her. He hopes too Nadine’s altercation with Viva Artists Agency exec Vic Del Rosario be solved.
Cherrie’s Daughter Turns Actress
For sure ex-veteran stars Eddie Mesa and Rosemarie Gil are proud that their daughter Cherrie Gil’s child Bianca Rogoff now a grown up joined their rank in the acting field. A graduate of Bachelor of Arts in Drama in U.S., Bianca’s first feature film Sensitive in Love had a premier night in New York. Despite her works in the Philippines, Cherrie enplaned to U.S. to grace it and be reunited with her other children and her parents who all live in U.S.
Aside from acting, Cherrie does a mentor job in film making workshop. She just finished the role of PDEA head in the TV action-drama series Beautiful Justice.
A Bold Alden to Emerge Soon?
Could it be true Alden Richards would accept more difficult roles, including a totally bold one within this year? A source did relay to me what Alden confided. The latter has no more bug bear to reject totally difficult assignments, including a bold one in a sex drama flick.
Reportedly, Alden affirmed he’s not closing his door to said offers just to prove his versatility to delineate various characters. If ever, Alden will rise to greater heights by doing that audacity.

A young actress has been talked about out of hot issues. Firstly, she’s in a rift with another actress for the latter accused her of manipulation for her to get the role originally assigned to her. Secondly, she’s in constant bonding with the family of her actor’s lover to let her rumored marriage with the actor be approved.
In her response, the actress called the gossips batty and chaff, scattered by those who yearn to malign and degrade her. “I’m unmindful kasi alam ko sinisiraan lang ako. Truth will prevail.” She quipped.

It’s probable that Carla Abellana and Tom Rodriguez would soon be altar bound. She hinted it to writers with these words. “We’re both old enough, have long years of relationships and ready to marry. Besides, ako na lang ang single among my chums.” Carla opened up in glee.
There’s no altercation between Janine Gutierrez’s family and Lolit Solis who’s Sen. Bong Revilla’s talent manager. In a talk with lolit, vet songstress Pilita Corrales who’s Janine’s grandma admitted to Lolit that Janine was apologetic for her negative tweets on Bong’s TV comeback in Agimat ng Agila.
On the other side, Lolit expounded to Pilita she has no tiff with Janine’s mom Lotlot de Leon over her siding with daughter on Bong’s issue. In passing, Lolit is my long time chum, ‘ninang’ of my daughter. And I got acquainted with Pilita during her relationship with Eddie Gutierrez whom I served as his pro.
Viewers have been impressed by the action skills of Beauty Gonzales and Dimples Romana in the finale of the TV series Kadenang Ginto. Not a few are asking who’ll be chosen between the two as the next guest in the top rated action show Ang Probinsyano? Sans consternation, many echo both are suitable to get special roles.
