Most people are anxious about the ongoing wars between Russia, Ukraine and Israel against Hamas in the Middle East, fearing that these wars might trigger the use of nuclear bombs in the arsenal of powerful countries.
It’s an open secret that the US, Russia, China, and other countries have a vast stockpile of nuclear warheads, hundreds more potent than the one used in Japan many years ago.
If these bombs were detonated, it could mean the end of humanity; the earth would turn into ashes.
We can say that our future looks bleak, and despite the sorry state we find ourselves in, the Holy Scriptures are giving us hope that God will not allow the world’s worsening conditions to continue indefinitely.
God will certainly intervene in the world’s affairs by installing a kingdom ” that will never be brought to ruin”(Daniel 2:44). We have been taught to pray for that Kingdom in what is commonly called the Lord’s Prayer—and that Kingdom will bring untold blessings to humankind. (Mat. 6:9,10)
To allay our fears, the Bible has many comforting thoughts that will give us peace of mind that these powerful countries possessing these nuclear warheads will not be able to use them to destroy this beautiful earth.
Ps 104:5 says,
He has established the earth on its foundations; It will not be moved from its place forever and ever.”
Another verse that will strengthen our faith that nothing will happen to this physical earth is Ecc.1:4, which says, “A generation is going, and a generation is coming. But the earth remains forever.”
Jesus Christ said, “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth”. (Mat.5:5 AV)
We may ask ourselves, how could the meek inherit the earth if nuclear bombs destroyed it?
We can be confident that our God will immediately intervene, not allowing these so-called Doomsday weapons to turn our beautiful earth into ashes. He will indeed eliminate wars. Ps 46:9 says, “ He is bringing an end to wars throughout the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; He burns the military wagons with fire.”
We can also ask ourselves if God is to be blamed for what is happening today: wars, suffering, violence, death, sickness, and pestilences like Covid-19.
In the Book of Jeremiah 29:12, God says, “For I well know the thoughts that I am thinking toward you,’ declares Jehovah, ‘thoughts of peace, and not of calamity, to give you a future and a hope.”
In short, God wants us to have peace, hope and a bright future.
If our God is not to be blamed for the earth’s woes, who is the one responsible?
1 John 5:19 says, “We know that we originate with God, but the whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one.”. This verse might be new knowledge for some people because, all the while, many people think that God is in control of the world.
The Bible tells us that we live in the last days; our God will destroy the wicked and bring about permanent solutions to humankind’s problems and sufferings through his Kingdom. God’s Kingdom is a Heavenly government.
Daniel 2:44 says, “In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed. And this Kingdom will not be passed on to any other people. It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it alone will stand forever”.
God’s Kingdom is not a vague concept in the heart—it is a real government that will bring lasting solutions to humankind’s problems. Through that Kingdom, God will first ” bring to ruin those ruining the earth.” Rev. 11:8). and those who obey him, ” he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore,” (Rev.21: 4.).
Have we ever asked ourselves why we need God to intervene in human affairs?
We need God simply because no man’s efforts—despite the advancement of science and technology–could bring about lasting solutions to the problems we face today, such as the escalating violence worldwide, worsening economic conditions, devastating natural calamities, sickness and even death.
Another truism is the fact that good self-rule is beyond us. ” To earthling man his way does not belong. It does not belong to man who is walking even to direct his step.” (Jer. 10:23). And because of our imperfections, we have neither the God-given right to rule ourselves nor the ability to do so effectively.
It’s better to reflect on these signs of the Last Days, in Luke 21:10-11.” Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against Nation, and Kingdom against Kingdom. There will be great earthquakes and in one place after another food shortages and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and from heaven great signs.”
Another sign of the last days is shown in 2 Tim 3_1-5, which says, “1But know this, that in the last days, critical times hard to deal with will be here. 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, haughty, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, disloyal, 3. having no natural affection, not open to any agreement, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, without love of goodness, 4 betrayers, headstrong, puffed up with pride, lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God, 5 having an appearance of godliness but proving false to its power; and from these turn away.”
So, what can we do now to prepare ourselves for this coming Great Tribulation that is sure to come? Zephaniah 2:3 says, “ 3 Seek Jehovah, all you meek ones of the earth, Who observe his righteous decrees. Seek righteousness, seek meekness. Probably you will be concealed on the day of Jehovah’s anger.”
