To quote showbiz authority Mario Hernando, the recent demise of veteran actress Zeny Zabala is a big loss in the movie world. From the ‘50s to early ‘70s Zeny has tagged the Villainess Queen who made things difficult for lead stars Gloria Romero, Lolita Rodriguez, Rita Gomez, Marlene Dauden and later Susan Roces and Amalia Fuentes in their starrers.
This writer can not help but to grieve for it so happened that Zeny was my original actress-friend. Through our mutual chum Irene Diaz Castillo who often tagged me in going to Zeny’s digs at Marikina, I found out that she was the exact opposite of her screen image. Off screen, she showcased a very amiable, hospitable and a highly religious nature.
In the mid ’70s the late producer Narciso Isidro (actress Agot Isidro’s grandfather) founded NGI outfit then handed Zeny her initial lead role in Mother Dear that brought her the best actress award at the Quezon City Film Festival. That was the time Zeny hired me as her personal pro. Eventually, she became a nominee again for best actress in Kalinga and Himala ng Birhen ng Penafrancia in other award giving bodies.
In passing, Zeny introduced me to film megger Ben Feleo who helmed some flicks of Amalia Fuentes under AM Productions. Through Ben, I befriended Amalia’s brothers Alex and Cheng Muhlach. At the time Amalia searched for a new pro, her brothers endorsed me that led to my working relationship with Amalia. This I credited to Alex, Cheng Zeny and Ben.
There were times Zeny missed Irene who retired from her writing job. Zeny fetched me frequently to tag me along in visiting Irene in her hometown in Laguna. All the more this writer had realized how Zeny kept her loyalty and how she valued friendship to the hilt.
Not surprising that in my stay in Canada, Zeny didn’t forget to contact me through facebook. Once, she told me she wanted to appear again be it on TV or movies with a request to back her up to my producer-pals which I did. Subsequently, Zeny got assignments in several boob tube drama and comedy series, grateful that she was to me.
Sadly, Zeny suffered kidney ailment and complication which caused her to be bed-ridden and inactiveness in showbiz. Whatever, both active and ex-showbiz people, old and young alike, showered Zeny a tremendous affection during her wake and burial which attested how well loved she was. Eternal peace be with you Zeny.
Bride to be Anne Curtis Reveals Future Plans
Finally, Anne Curtis entrenches about her looming marital plunge with non-showbiz lover Erwan Heussaff, who’s actress Solenn Heussaff’s brother.
